Spiritual Development Credit (SD Credit)

1. What is Spiritual Development Credit?

     a. SD Credit helps provide a variety of opportunities for students to deepen wisdom, character, and service development.

     b. Expanding Chapel values by integrating Student Life service learning outcomes.

2. Why are we doing SD Credit?

     a. Cultivating a lifelong faith formation journey at UNW and beyond. Students engage with their spiritual formation in different ways, UNW is looking to expand what that can look like here on campus and do it in ways that will be practical to life after college.

     b. These opportunities are meant to guide students to steward and take responsibility of their faith journeys. SDC is a great way to integrate faith, learning and living.

3. How to earn credit – What does it look like?

     a. Through increased avenues of spiritual engagement, students may earn 1/3 (Approx. 1 per week) SDC from participating in approved outside of Chapel opportunities. Students will earn the reaming 2/3 (approx. 2 per week) SDC by attending Chapel.**

      • Daily Chapel is integrated into the class schedule – MWF @ 10:30am and TR @ 9:55am. (Please see Chapel section below or SDC Reference Guide for more details)
      • SDC opportunities: Can be earned through approved hall Bible studies, prayer gatherings, club events, academic department events, and UNW community events and etc.

     b. All Full-time students (12 or more credits) in the traditional program are required to receive/attend 21-22 spiritual development opportunities per Quad, which is an average of 3 times per week.

**Students still have the option to receive ALL their credits through chapel if they choose to do so as well.

Chapel

Mission of Chapel

Chapel is an opportunity for all of Northwestern to daily gather to share in an experience of worship that engages with creative and diverse content that will encourage, challenge, and invite us to a life of faith, hope, love, and service. Every chapel is planned with the following values in mind:

  1.       Christ Centered. We seek to glorify and experience God through content that is rooted in Christ.
  2.       Transformation-Focused. We seek development that encourages a genuine, transformative journey.
  3.       Community-Oriented. We seek to understand, love, and journey together as part of the body of Christ.

  • Chapel has transitioned into a subsection of Spiritual Development Credit. (Please see Spiritual Development Credit section above for more details)
