- The Bachelor of Arts degree requires foreign language competency through the second semester of college credit (1002 level).
- Competency at the end-of-first-year level may be achieved in the following ways: through completion of language courses at Northwestern through the 1002 level, CLEP examinations through the 1002 level, transfer of equivalent credits from other colleges, or completion of three years of one foreign language during high school (subject to minimum grade standards [i.e., B- average or higher]). If competency is demonstrated through completion of foreign language during high school, the credits are not applied, but the student is allowed that number of additional elective credits.
- Students for whom English is a second language will meet the B.A. foreign language requirement by achieving a minimum of C- in ENG1105/1825, ENG2205/2825, and SPE1075/1825.
- American Sign Language is considered a foreign language. Policies governing foreign languages also apply to a sign language.
