Emergency Responsibilities for Trip Leaders
- While traveling, an emergency may occur. Students or leaders may become ill, have an accident, become a victim of a crime, or become involved in a politically violent situation. As a trip leader, you will need to be prepared to be on call continuously until any emergency is resolved.
- In an emergency, the first responsibility is to protect the safety and well-being of all program participants. Do whatever it takes to ensure this. It may mean getting immediate medical assistance, having the US embassy intervene, or seeking police protection.
- In case of terrorist attack or natural disaster, gather in a pre-arranged location to ensure all participants are accounted for.
- Follow directives of local authorities.
- The campus STOP. THINK. ACT.
- Emergency procedures may also be followed in most situations abroad, with minor adjustments.
- Know the host country’s 9-1-1- equivalent.
