Immunizations

  • Minnesota law requires that all students born after 1956 provide certain immunization information and be up-to-date prior to college entrance. As noted on the required online immunization form, you must show proof of one dose of tetanus and diphtheria (Td or Tdap) given within 10 years of enrollment and two doses of measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR). Also, a tuberculin test is required for all students entering the U.S. from a foreign country.

What about Hepatitis A and B vaccines?

  • The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) requires that college students be informed about these diseases and the potential benefits of vaccination. The MDH recommends that all students receive the Hepatitis B vaccine series if they have not already done so. Also, students who plan to travel outside the U.S. are advised to receive the Hepatitis A series. Information about the disease is available at http://www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/PublicInfo.htm.

What about the meningitis vaccine?

  • Bacterial meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria (meningococcal disease) can be fatal and should always be viewed as a medical emergency. Although anyone can get meningitis, pre-teens, adolescents and college freshmen who live in dormitories and travelers to countries where meningitis is always present are at increased risk for meningococcal disease. For more information, you can visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at http://www.cdc.gov/meningitis/vaccine-info.html.

Recommendations for college-age students

  • Pre-teens/Adolescents: Meningococcal conjugate vaccine is routinely recommended for all 11 through 18 year olds.(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC])

  • Adults: Meningitis vaccine is recommended for all first-year students living in residence halls and for other college students under 25 years of age who wish to reduce their risk of the disease. (American College Health Association [ACHA])

New Recommendations:

  • The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) states that persons aged 21 years or younger should have documentation of receipt of a dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine not more than five years before enrollment. If the primary dose was administered before the 16th birthday, a booster dose should be administered before enrollment in college.

Discuss Meningitis vaccine with your physician

  • Please discuss this important information with your physician in order to make an informed decision about the immunizations. Hepatitis and Meningitis vaccines are not stocked at Health Services. Please contact your health provider to receive any needed immunizations as soon as possible.

Insurance Information

At the University of Northwestern, we want to do all we can to help you successfully navigate through college life, and sometimes that means managing unexpected challenges due to illness or injury. Health insurance is necessary to get the care you need and can keep medical expenses from derailing your educational goals. Additionally, it is now required by law that you have qualifying health insurance coverage or pay a fine.

Because of this, we strongly advise that all students carry health insurance. Many of you will be covered by your parent's health insurance plan. If your circumstances cause you to be without health insurance, explore private health plans purchased individually or through the Marketplace, catastrophic health plans and Medicaid coverage. At this time, UNW is not offering a student health care plan.
