Nurses have the duty to provide care that is safe and to reduce risk and otherwise protect patients and others from potential injury and harm. The clinical instructor has the right and the obligation to remove from clinical settings a student whose behavior is unsafe or presents a hazard to themselves or others. Examples include illness

, intoxication, impaired judgment, and/or unpreparedness in the care of a patient. A student may not attend clinical under the influence of a controlled substance. Any action on the part of a student that puts a patient's safety at risk either physically or emotionally in a clinical experience will be reviewed by the faculty with a possible corrective action that may include a recommendation of failure in the clinical course or removal from the program.
