Description

Blocks appear in the right sidebar of Moodle courses to improve and streamline student experience and teaching functions. Blocks are usually only present on the front page of any course, and include helpful information such as a calendar of due dates, instructor contact info, recent announcements, or a progress bar.

Uses

Ui expand
titleCalendar and Due Dates

Possibly the clearest ways to emphasize due dates to students is to assign them by editing the settings for assignments, forums, and quizzes. Then, all those due dates will show as a highlighted emphasis on the calendar block.

Ui expand
titleContacting Your Instructor

Provide a face for your students and your preferred contact information and office hours "front and center" in your course site using an HTML block (which can be customized with any content just like a Moodle page or label).

Ui expand
titleCompletion Progress

The Completion Progress bar helps students know what still needs their attention by making it visual and easy to access incomplete tasks. This block works well along with the Calendar and automatic activity completion tracking.

Ui expand
titleQuickmail
If you need to reach students with an email immediately, the Quickmail block enables clear, timely messaging to a whole class or select individuals. Quickmail messages send to students like a normal email, which may work better if announcements get lost in the once-a-day digest email students receive from Moodle which combines all Moodle notifications from the whole day.

See the second portion of this page for tips on using Quickmail.
