title5.1 Overview of the Process of Admission to the BSN Program

After acceptance to the A University of Northwestern , students may begin the application process for the nursing major. The first step is to study for, and take, the TEAS entrance exam, passing with a 65% or higher. Once the student has passed the TEAS, they will be given access to the SON application and interview schedule through their Admission Portal.
Interviews are conducted by a member of the SON Admission and Progression Committee. Students will be notified of the committee’s decision within two weeks of the interview. Students are initially accepted into the nursing program on a “probationary basis”. This status changes to “official” when the student has completed all SON admission requirements as follows:

  • All prerequisite courses completed with a “C” or higher

  • Upload proof of required immunizations, etc, (immunizations required by the SON’s clinical partners)

  • Review and upload SON admission forms

  • 10-14 credits or less of core curriculum remaining

The SON application process and resources are located in the Admission Portal and in the Pre-Nursing Fundamentals Moodle site.

The School of Nursing will accept SON applications up to two months prior to the start of the upcoming cohort. Students will be screened carefully for acceptance into the program and for best placement in either the accelerated path or traditional path. Consideration will be given to the student’s preferred path. Qualified candidates with more credits from UNWSP will be given greater consideration than those with fewer credits from this institutionstudent who has declared a nursing major, after meeting the following requirements, will be able to progress into Term 1 nursing courses. Students must:

  • Complete all prerequisite courses with a “C” grade or higher

  • Have a GPA of 2.75 or higher at the start of Term 1 nursing courses

  • Pass the TEAS Entrance Exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills) with a score of 65% or higher

  • Have no more than 12 remaining core curriculum credits upon entering Term 1. These 12 remaining credits must be completed by the end of Term 3.

  • Submit all required health and background check documents

Students will work collaboratively with the Nursing Program Student Success Coach and develop a plan for completing all requirements to progress into Term 1 nursing courses. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to choose the timing for entering into either the traditional or accelerated path. The School of Nursing will give consideration into each student’s preference when determining placement into the accelerated or traditional path.

For UNW students who are enrolled in the Post-Secondary Education Option (PSEO), have completed all pre-requisite science courses through UNW, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.75 two months prior to Term 1, the TEAS Entrance Examination requirement is waived.

Students desiring to take courses from other institutions should check with the Registrar in advance to determine if credits can be transferred to meet university requirements. All requests for transfer of credit to University of Northwestern - St. Paul must be directed to the Registrar.
