- All majors will require a course within their major that is designated as an Oral Communication Emphasis course (OCE). In these courses students are required to demonstrate skills in oral communication appropriate for the major.
- SPE1075 Public Speaking or transfer equivalent is a required prerequisite for the OCE course.
- The following are minimal requirements for courses with an OCE designation:
- At least one oral presentation must
- be presented while standing in front of the entire class (not one-on-one or small part of the class),
- involve original work (not performances of someone else’s work),
- be evaluated using the approved form (not necessarily related to grade),
- be “formal” in nature as defined by the department/school,
- be a minimum of 10 minutes long,
- must be an individual presentation.

At least 20 percent of the grade for the course should be based on the evaluation of the projects that include the oral presentation.
OCE WCE Instructions
OCE/WCE - At the beginning of each semester (fall & spring) the Assessment office sends out a notice to faculty members reminding them to pick up the WCE & OCE forms from the Assessment office. Make sure you calculate at the beginning of the year and order enough quantity to cover both semesters by doubling fall and adding about 50 more of each. These surveys are located in SurveyPro S:\AcadVP\Surveys\OCE-WCE Surveys and update the heading with the new year.
To update the survey:
Find last year’s survey in last year’s S:drive file
- AcadVP
- Surveys
- OCE-WCE Surveys
- 2016-2017 OCE WCE surveys
- Select the “2016-2017 WCE (or OCE) Survey” with the little Survey Pro icon
- Open it up and change the dates by clicking on the title
- Also go to executive summary and change the dates there.
- Document
- Properties
- Title
- Footer
- Create a new folder for the new year
- Then Save As “20xx-20xx WCE (or OCE) Survey” in the folder you just created
Create Form to Send to the print center:
While still in Survey Pro (after making and saving changes)
Click File
Click Print
Select “Adobe PDF” which is the bottom most selection
Click Print and then save in appropriate folder
Name it “20xx-xx WCE (or OCE) Survey FORM”
Complete this same process for both OCE & WCE
Retrieve OCE/WCE Class info:
Go to Argos (https://inb.unwsp.edu/)
Select Argos (second option down, left hand side, under Production)
Select Academics
Select Faculty, the Faculty Dashboard, the Run Dashboard
Select appropriate semester, Trad Undergraduate, All Departments, Enter
It will take a long time to run
Then make sure the options on the left hand column match the picture below: Course Code, Instructor, Max Enrollment, Seats Available, Section
This will help you determine how many forms to order for each class.
Which Classes are OCE and which are WCE:Select the next tab in Argos called “Course Meeting Information” and set it up with the options seen in the picture below
- After gathering this info. copy and paste it into an Excel sheet. Delete unneeded columns and add one to list the number of forms needed for each class, as pictured below:
Place Order on theRock with Print Center
Take the number of registered students and double it (because we’re ordering for both semesters) and add 50 for good measure
Select the Campus Services tab
Select Eagle Print (middle column, near the bottom, under Print Center)
Select 80 lb. white paper
Shipping Acct # 60110
Org # 2051 (leave fund number and activity code blank)
Distribution of the OCE WCE Surveys:
- After getting the forms back from prink center send an email out to each group of faculty. The email template can be found at S:, AcadVP, Surveys, OCE-WCE Surveys, 2016-2017 OCE & WCE Surveys, OCE.WCE Email notice template)
- Next, send the forms along with the WCE letter (found at AcadVP, Surveys, OCE-WCE Surveys, WCE letter to Professor ) and/or the OCE (found at AcadVP, Surveys, OCE-WCE Surveys, OCE letter to Professor ). Make sure to modify the letter before printing. Use Mail Merge to easily import Professor’s name and the name of the class. Place letters and forms in envelope.
- Please deliver the envelopes to appropriate office or use inter-campus mail.
- At the end of the term they deliver completed and blank forms to N2305 (my office)
- When they are returned, just collect them in one place and at the end of the academic year, have the student worker run them through the scanner and run report for each. We use these results for the Assessment Annual.
