Military Active Duty

Military Active Duty
  • If a student is serving in Reserve or National Guard units and is called to active military duty, he/she may be able to drop a course(s) with a full refund of UNW tuition charges and fees. If the student is a financial aid recipient, he/she will be subject to refund policies as provided by the aid program sponsors. UNW financial aid and student accounts will review all requests for tuition and fee reimbursement.
  • In some circumstances, the student may want to ask his/her instructor(s) about grading of Incomplete for coursework as an alternative to dropping. When appropriate, the instructor(s) may allow the student to take an Incomplete for the course(s) in question. The student should contact his/her respective University office (i.e., College of Graduate, Online & Adult Learning, Registrar’s Office, or Office of Dual Enrollment) regarding policy of when grades of Incomplete are due.
  • Short-term Leave
    • If the student will miss classes for short-term military leave or military training exercises (example: annual training for National Guard and Reserve members), he/she must contact their instructors as soon as possible so appropriate accommodations can be made.
    • Northwestern requests students to be proactive in alerting their instructors to possible absences, and to notify their respective University office with any questions.
  • Spouses of Service Members Called to Active Duty: If a student is the spouse of a service member and has a dependent child the same terms and conditions of this policy apply if their spouse is called to active duty.  Students must present the service member’s orders to their respective University office to begin the process withdrawal and reimbursement.
    • Exceptions: Please note this refund policy does not apply to students called to Active Duty for training. This includes Initial Entry Training, such as Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) or Military Occupational Specialty Qualification (MOS-Q).
