2.10 Medical Emergencies
- A teacher candidate who requires emergency medical assistance should be transported to the nearest emergency medical facility by calling 911. Northwestern Health Services should be notified (651-631-5246) as well as the Director of Field Experiences and Student Teaching (651-631-5289).
- University Supervisors should request that teacher candidates notify them in writing by the first week of the placement if they have medical conditions that might require emergency treatment during the placement. The candidate should also be encouraged to share this information with the cooperating teacher. However, it must be understood that candidates do have the right to keep their medical information private.
- All candidates are encouraged to carry emergency contact numbers with them during school placements.
- Candidates must follow school and district protocol regarding COVID-19 and/or other infectious diseases. Protocols may include wearing face coverings, adhering to distancing, cleaning/sanitizing, and isolating/quarantining. Though immunization is recommended, candidates have a right to privacy regarding COVID immunization.
- Should a candidate feel ill, the candidate will remain home until consultation with a personal physician. The candidate will notify the cooperating teacher, university supervisor, and Director of Field Experiences and Student Teaching of a suspected or confirmed illness. Should isolation be required, the host school and UNW team will determine whether the candidate can continue participation digitally. If testing positive for COVID or other illnesses, the candidate must complete any isolation recommended by a personal physician, district policy, and UNW Health Services.
