Admission Requirements for the BSN Program

IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED A QUALIFYING CANDIDATE FOR THE SCHOOL OF NURSING, THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM CRITERIA MUST BE MET:

  1. Acceptance to the University of Northwestern – St. Paul, meeting all admission requirements, i.e. application and official transcripts.
  2. Currently enrolled in or successful completion of all core curriculum courses (as outlined in the designated Curriculum Plan).
  3. Currently enrolled in or successful completion (with a grade of “C” or higher) of all prerequisite courses (BIO 3145/L; BIO 3157/L; BIO 3158/L; CHE 1021/L; ENG 1105; PHI 2016; PSY 2108; MAT course/PSY 3208*) or their equivalents as approved by the appropriate Academic Department Chair. All pre-requisite courses or their equivalents must be completed by the start of Term 1 of the Nursing Program. (* Subject to change Spring 2018)
  4. Preference will be given to those with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 (on a 4.00 scale) based upon all courses taken.


IN ORDER TO BE ACCEPTED INTO THE SCHOOL OF NURSING, THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA MUST BE FULFILLED, DEMONSTRATING THE HIGHEST OF EXCELLENCE:

  1. Submit a completed nursing application to the University of Northwestern – St. Paul School of Nursing to include Self-Assessment & Personal Statements (available online).
  2. Complete a satisfactory Background Check (set up through the School of Nursing).
  3. Submit one Character Reference Form* (Non-family / friends) (form available online). (* Subject to change Spring 2018)
  4. Submit completed School of Nursing forms (forms available online):
    1. Health and Immunization Clearances
    2. Background Disclosure
    3. Release Agreement
    4. Agreement to Program Policies
    5. Student Confidentiality Agreement
  5. Provide evidence of CPR certification (American Heart Association’s CPR for Health Care Providers or Basic Life Support (BLS), or American Red Cross’s CPR for Professional Rescuers). Online certification is not acceptable.
  6. Obtain satisfactory scores on the TEAS entrance exam.
  7. Obtain a satisfactory personal interview conducted by faculty from the School of Nursing’s Admission and Progression Committee, demonstrating suitability for the nursing profession.
  8. Receive a positive recommendation by the School of Nursing’s Admission and Progression Committee.
  9. Written acknowledgement of School of Nursing Acceptance Letter. Please be aware of the following:
    1. The baccalaureate student nurse role requires walking, bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods of time to manage, coordinate, and administer nursing care.
    2. The student may be required to meet specific requirements as mandated by the clinical agencies.
    3. Personal health insurance is required, throughout the nursing program.
  10. Attendance at all scheduled orientations for University of Northwestern - Saint Paul and School of Nursing.
