Technology Essentials
  • Northwestern recognizes that effectively and creatively using technology can contribute to providing a consistently high-quality experience to students. Some basic programs and systems are essential for faculty members to function efficiently at UNW. Instructions for using these technologies can be found on the IT tab of theRock.

Essential Functions

    • Posting final grades at the end of the term for each student in Self-Service Banner
    • Accessing the class list (roster) in Self-Service Banner
    • Accessing and sending email from Northwestern’s email system
    • Uploading a course syllabus for the current term to the Learning Management System
    • Entering academic updates in the Student Retention System when students:
      • are at risk of failing the class
      • have excessive absences

Ancillary Functions

In addition, teachers can consider using technology for the following important teaching functions. For specific ideas see the Faculty Technology Manual.

    • Informing students how they’re doing in the class, and providing regular and timely feedback.
    • Providing learning materials to students
    • Using multimedia enhancements and illustrations of your materials
    • Connecting students with other support services on campus
