Title IX

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..."  20 U.S.C. § 1681

Employees and students of University of Northwestern – St. Paul have a right to an employment and academic environment which is free of discrimination on the basis of sex, which includes all forms of sexual misconduct, including, but not limited to, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and sexual violence by employees, students, or third parties. Title IX protects men and women students from unlawful sexual harassment in school programs and activities, including admissions, recruitment, financial aid, academic programs, athletics, housing, and employment.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational programs that receive federal financial assistance. Under Title IX, discrimination on the basis of sex can include sexual harassment; unwelcomed sexual advances; or sexual violence, such as rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual coercion.

Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (Campus SaVE)

Campus SaVE (SaVE) is a companion to Title IX that requires all colleges and universities, participating in federal student aid programs, to increase transparency about and increase efforts in the prevention of sexual violence within higher education.

Incidents of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking must be disclosed in annual campus crime statistic reports.

SaVE instructs colleges and universities to address the issues of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking by providing prevention education programming for students and employees; clarifying victim’s rights; and establishing standards for institutional disciplinary procedures.

Notice of Non-discrimination

In accordance with applicable federal and state laws, such as Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act and ADA Amendments, the University of Northwestern – St. Paul does not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, age, disability, marital status, genetic information, veteran status, or any other protected status under federal, state, or local law applicable to the University of Northwestern – St. Paul, in its education programs and activities, in employment policies and practices, and all other areas of the University. As a faith-based institution, the University is exempted from certain laws and regulations concerning discrimination. The University maintains the right, with regard to admissions, enrollment, employment, and other matters, to uphold and apply its religious beliefs related to, among other issues, marriage, sex (gender), gender identity, sexual orientation, and sexual activity.
