Overview

Did you know that over a third of our traditional undergrad students are commuters? Commuter Life at UNW exists to serve commuter students through seeing, supporting, engaging, and connecting them with the greater Northwestern community. The Director of Commuter Life and student team of Commuter Assistants work hard to provide support for students who experience the unique challenges of living off-campus.  Stay up to date by following us on Instagram @unwcommuterlife or Facebook at UNW Commuter Life.

Program/Support

Commuter students, we’re here for you! And we’re always up for connecting.  You’re invited to come find us in the Commuter Life office (G124), where our Commuter Assistants hold office hours throughout the week, offering you some space to gather or study.  Or contact us anytime; we’d love to hear your ideas for Commuter Life or simply sit and hear what God is up to in your life!

Events

One of the ways we connect commuter students with each other and with other UNW students is through events.  Be sure to follow us on Instagram or Facebook to stay updated on what we're planning for Spring 2021 and beyond.  Here's a list of some of the things we're planning:

  • All Week, March 15-19:  Scavenger Hunt On Campus
  • Wednesday, April 7,  7:30-9:30am:  Good Morning Commuters (Free coffee and donuts for commuters!)

FAQ's

Ui expand
titleAs a commuter, am I free to participate in on-campus events and activities?

Yes! There are many departments and student groups that have a lot going on throughout the school year.  Commuter students are encouraged to use these events and activities as ways to engage with campus life!  The one exception would be living-space specific programming.  Each dorm hall will at times host events just for those specific students.  But don’t get too bummed, Commuter Life does this too!  We host programming specific to your “living-space” at certain times.

Ui expand
titleDo I need a parking pass? How do I get it?

Don't worry about finding a parking spot! Northwestern reserves our best parking for commuters. Park near the academic buildings and residence areas! Read Public Safety’s guidelines for parking and motor vehicle use.  A commuter parking permit allows commuter students to park in general parking lots from 6 a.m. until 1 a.m., seven days a week.

Ui expand
titleDo commuter commuters have a meal plan?

Because commuters have different meal needs than residents, Northwestern has a unique meal plan for commuting students. In this plan, most commuters are able to purchase three meals each week in our dining center. This is a great way to connect with your Northwestern community.

Ui expand
titleAre there computers and printers available to use on campus?

Computers in the academic buildings, the library, and residence buildings are available to commuting students allowing you to have full access to your academic files on and off campus. Also, there are various printers around campus available for student use.

Ui expand
titleIs there a place to put my stuff while I'm on campus during the day?

Northwestern provides free lockers for commuters. To request a locker, click here.
