title6.2 Student Teaching Placement

The student teaching placement is performed under the supervision of a cooperating teacher who holds a current full professional Minnesota education license in the applicable licensure field and has taught for a minimum of three years.

The student teaching experience will be full time for 14 to 18 weeks depending on the requirements of the licensure program. In most licensure programs the experience is divided into two placements. The student is expected to be at the placement for all assigned days and whenever the teacher is required to be there (e.g., before students arrive, after students leave, conference days, workdays, in-service days). The student follows the school district calendar during the student teaching semester.

The student may request a specific placement at the time of application in any of the districts with which Northwestern has an established relationship. The Director of Field Experiences and Student Teaching will take this request into consideration in obtaining the placement but the request does not guarantee the placement.  A change of request for placement will only be considered if there is neither a confirmed request nor a request in process from the office of the Director of Field Experiences and Student Teaching for that placement.

Students are not permitted to contact schools directly to arrange a student teaching placement.  Because extensive feedback from the University supervisors is an essential part of the preparation process, the student teaching placement must be within reasonable commuting distance to UNW.

To maintain the integrity of the program, every effort will be made to place students with cooperating teachers and in locations that will not compromise the learning experience or the evaluation process.

During the placement the student must meet the following requirements:

1) Provide transportation to and from the placement.

2) Be familiar with all of the information in the Student Teaching Handbook regarding expectations and procedures.

3) Attend EDU4835 Seminar in Professional Issues seminars and weekly or bi-weekly meetings with an assigned University supervisor.

4) Teach a minimum of 5 consecutive days in 5 to 8-week placement and ten consecutive days in 10 to 14-week placement.

Complete the student teaching experience satisfactorily and successfully pass all required assessments.  This includes successful completion of the edTPA and demonstrating a minimum performance level of at least 2 on all required SEP aligned standards in the Student Teaching Evaluation Form.  Students not meeting these minimum standards will be required to remediate work prior to licensure recommendation.

5) The policies regarding appearance and attire as defined in Chapter 1 of this handbook extend to the student teaching placement. Therefore, student teachers will need to abide by these policies as they assume the professional role of a student teacher.
