Online Etiquette for Remote Participation
Online WritingÂ
Whether typing an email, posting in a discussion forum, or writing in another online space, be mindful of your words.Â
Interactions through MoodleÂ
- Be RespectfulÂ
- We all bring unique perspectives to our learning communities. Â
- Respect others’ thoughts, feelings, and opinions even when they differ from your own.Â
- Be Polite Â
- Watch your tone.Â
- It is hard to interpret sarcasm, jokes, or passion in written text.Â
- Be ScholarlyÂ
- Use proper grammar and spelling.Â
- Cite your sources.Â
Interactions through EmailÂ
- Be ProfessionalÂ
- Include proper greeting and salutation. Â
- Include a clear subject line.Â
- Identify your course when writing your professor.Â
- Proofread your writing for grammar, spelling, etc.Â
- Be PatientÂ
- Allow time to respond.Â
- 24 hours is a good rule of thumb.Â
- Be CourteousÂ
- After you receive a reply, provide a reply yourself to say thank you, ask a follow-up question, or provide feedback.Â
- Address conflict in person when possible. Â
Virtual MeetingsÂ
- Be ProfessionalÂ
- Dress as if you were attending a face-to-face class. Â
- Arrive on time.Â
- Remember what you share on your screen can be seen by others.Â
- Ask permission to share others’ work with anyone outside of the class.Â
- Be Mindful of your SurroundingsÂ
- Choose a quiet location with minimal background noise. Â
- Mute your mic unless you are speaking. Â
- Choose a private location without people or distractions in the background. Â
- Consider a virtual background.Â
- Be PresentÂ
- Make sure that your microphone and camera are working properly.Â
- Turn on your camera.Â
- Actively participate and engage just as you would in a face-to-face setting.Â
