Online Etiquette for Remote Participation
Online Writing
Whether typing an email, posting in a discussion forum, or writing in another online space, be mindful of your words.
Interactions through Moodle
- Be Respectful
- We all bring unique perspectives to our learning communities.
- Respect others’ thoughts, feelings, and opinions even when they differ from your own.
- Be Polite
- Watch your tone.
- It is hard to interpret sarcasm, jokes, or passion in written text.
- Be Scholarly
- Use proper grammar and spelling.
- Cite your sources.
Interactions through Email
- Be Professional
- Include proper greeting and salutation.
- Include a clear subject line.
- Identify your course when writing your professor.
- Proofread your writing for grammar, spelling, etc.
- Be Patient
- Allow time to respond.
- 24 hours is a good rule of thumb.
- Be Courteous
- After you receive a reply, provide a reply yourself to say thank you, ask a follow-up question, or provide feedback.
- Address conflict in person when possible.
Virtual Meetings
- Be Professional
- Dress as if you were attending a face-to-face class.
- Arrive on time.
- Remember what you share on your screen can be seen by others.
- Ask permission to share others’ work with anyone outside of the class.
- Be Mindful of your Surroundings
- Choose a quiet location with minimal background noise.
- Mute your mic unless you are speaking.
- Choose a private location without people or distractions in the background.
- Consider a virtual background.
- Be Present
- Make sure that your microphone and camera are working properly.
- Turn on your camera.
- Actively participate and engage just as you would in a face-to-face setting.
