12.5 Lab Prescriptions

Overview

Lab Prescription 

 A lab prescription is the official documentation used to support formal remediation. It provides an individualized competency-development plan designed to help students strengthen clinical knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, and professional behaviors requiring additional development. When formal remediation is initiated, the clinical faculty member, in collaboration with the clinical course lead faculty, will develop the lab prescription. 

 The lab prescription includes: 

 Competencies requiring additional development 

• Learning objectives 

• Prescribed learning activities 

• Faculty coaching and oversight 

• Timeline for completion 

• Criteria for demonstrating competency 

• Documentation of student progress and successful completion 

Completion of a lab prescription alone does not establish competency. Students must subsequently demonstrate the expected competency in the appropriate clinical, simulation, or laboratory setting. 

When necessary to ensure patient safety, faculty may require successful completion of prescribed remediation activities before a student returns to specific clinical learning experiences.
