In March of 2024, the VMware Horizon infrastructure for accessing virtual machines will be upgraded with support for single sign-on (SSO) to access the portal. SSO, and by extension multifactor authentication, are critical elements to the account security and access to resources on UNW’s network. This article outlines the changes to the login flow, including where a UNW account password will still be needed to login to a virtual machine.

Web Browser Login Flow

New SSO Login

  1. Navigate to https://vws.unwsp.edu on your web browser and choose the VMware Horizon HTML Access.

  2. Your browser will redirect to login.microsoftonline.com to perform the SSO login.

    1. Enter your email and sign in if needed.

  3. You will be redirected back to the VMware Horizon portal where you can choose your VM to access.

     

  4. Accessing a VM will now ask for the username and password since they are no longer used to access VMware Horizon itself.

Old Login

  1. Navigate to https://vws.unwsp.edu on your web browser and choose the VMware Horizon HTML Access.

  2. Enter your username and password, as well as choose the appropriate domain (EMP/STU).

     

  3. You are presented with the portal to choose your VM to access.

     

  4. Accessing a VM will automatically login (where supported) with the username and password you entered for VMware Horizon.

     

VMware Horizon Client Login Flow

New SSO Login

  1. Open the VMware Horizon Client on your computer.

  2. Choose the icon for the vws.unwsp.edu server.

    1. You can use the options menu (3 dots) to auto connect to this server every time.

       

  3. Your default web browser will open to login.microsoftonline.com to perform the SSO login.

    1. Enter your email and sign in if needed.

       

  4. Your web browser will ask to open the VMware Horizon Client.

    1. We recommend checking Always allow.

    2. Click Open

  5. The VMware Horizon Client will display the portal to select a VM to access.

     

  6. Accessing a VM will now ask for the username and password since it is no longer used to access VMware Horizon itself.

     

Old Login

  1. Open the VMware Horizon Client on your computer.

  2. Choose the icon for the vws.unwsp.edu server.

     

  3. Enter your username and password, as well as choose the appropriate domain (EMP/STU).

     

  4. The VMware Horizon Client will display the portal to select a VM to access.
