11.8 Removal of Student from Clinical

11.8 Removal of Student from Clinical

Overview

The School of Nursing is dedicated to promoting patient safety, upholding professional standards, and supporting student success.

  • Immediate Safety Action: A clinical instructor has the authority to temporarily remove a student from the clinical setting if the student is identified as unfit for safe practice. This step is protective, not punitive.

  • Notification & Review: As soon as possible, the clinical instructor will notify the lead faculty and/or School of Nursing leadership. This ensures the concern is reviewed in the context of the student’s overall academic and professional record and that the instructor is supported in decision-making.

  • Student Involvement: The student will be informed of the concern and provided with the opportunity to share their perspective.

  • Support & Referral: Students may be referred to counseling, Academic Achievement, Student Life, or a Student Support Plan, and may be required to provide documentation of readiness before returning to clinical.

  • Next Steps: If further review is needed, the case will be referred to the appropriate School of Nursing committee. If dismissal or other disciplinary action is considered, the case will be referred to the appropriate university committee, consistent with the University Code of Conduct and Student Experience policies, to ensure fairness and due process.

Our Commitment

This process is guided by the School of Nursing’s responsibility to protect patients, uphold the ANA Code of Ethics, and provide students with fair and supportive opportunities for success.
