5.4 Appendix D: Placement-related Traumatic Events

School and community leaders strive to make schools safe and happy places to learn. None-the-less, it is heartbreaking that today’s students, personnel, and families too frequently experience traumatic events within their schools.

In the event that a candidate experiences a traumatic event within the host school, the candidate promptly updates the university supervisor, program coordinator, and Director of Field Experiences and Student Teaching. 

This UNW Department of Teacher Education team will direct the candidate to seek support by immediately contacting UNW’s counseling services and/or referring the candidate to her/his personal health care professionals.

Guided by recommendations from health professionals, the candidate and the UNW Department of Teacher Education team will pursue the Admission and Retention Committee process to document a plan for supporting the candidate’s health and for completing placement and program requirements.
