5 Human Relations and Diverse Learners Requirement

5.1 Human Relations Requirement

All persons wishing to obtain licensure in any education field must complete the Human Relations component of the Teacher Education Program.  This preparation is required by the state of Minnesota. All institutions recommending individuals for licensure must provide Human Relations education.

It is intended that, through the Human Relations component, all those who are licensed to teach will be able to work with a variety of students in a positive and effective manner, showing respect for each student as unique and valuable and understanding each student's background and needs.

It is the responsibility of each student to complete the requirements and meet the deadlines set by the School of Education.

REQUIREMENTS

The Human Relations component must be completed by the semester preceding student teaching. To complete the Human Relations component, all education majors must meet the following requirements:

Human Relations – Part I

Enroll in and successfully complete the course, EDU3209 Human Relations in a Cross-Culturally Diverse World and the related lab: EDU3209L Human Relations Lab: Part I – Diverse Classroom Field Experience (30 hours).

The course EDU3209 Human Relations in a Cross-Culturally Diverse World is designed to develop an understanding of the contributions and lifestyles of the various racial, cultural and economic groups in American society with emphasis on respect for human diversity and personal rights.  Emphasis is on the translation of human relations knowledge into the creation of effective learning experiences and environments which contribute to the self-esteem of all persons and to positive interpersonal relations while avoiding dehumanizing biases, discrimination and prejudice in American education. Pre-student teaching is required.

Enroll in and successfully complete EDU3218 Educating Diverse Learners K-12 or EDU3248 Educating Diverse Learners PK-8 and the related lab: EDU3218L or EDU3248L. The 10 hours of field experience required for this lab is completed concurrently with EDU3209L Human Relations Lab (Part I) for a total of 30 hours of classroom experience

Human Relations – Part II

Successfully complete EDU3209L Part II - Diverse Non-Classroom Field Experience (30 hours)

Part II - Diverse Non-Classroom Field Experience provides direct involvement with an ethnic or cultural group other than the student’s own within the continental United States. The service opportunities allow participants to develop an understanding and respect for cultural differences. Thirty contact hours are required.

5.2 Diverse Non-Classroom Filed Experience Alternative Placement Requests

All requests for an alternative plan for meeting the Diverse Non-Classroom Field Experience requirements must be approved by the course instructor or the Exceptions Committee. Up to 15 hours of overseas experience may be accepted.  However, the remaining 15 hours must be completed in the continental United States. Typically, overseas trips do not meet the cross-cultural criteria.  However, if the following requirements are met, the course instructor or Exceptions Committee may grant approval:

The candidate must successfully complete EDU3209 Human Relations in a Cross-Culturally Diverse World and EDU3209L Part I – Diverse Classroom Field Experience (30 hours) prior to completing the experience.

The experience must include involvement with populations found in Minnesota schools.

The candidate must provide the name and contact information of an individual who provided supervision of the experience so that the experience may be verified.

The experience must be recent (within the last 2 years).

5.2 Transfer Guidelines for Human Relations

Transfer students who have completed part or all of the Human Relations components prior to registration at the University of Northwestern, must obtain approval from the SOE to apply these credits to the Human Relations program.  This is accomplished by submitting a Transfer Course Evaluation form and a copy of the course syllabus to the Assistant Dean of the School of Education for review.  Samples of completed course work may also be requested as part of the review process.
