2.2 Transfer Student Admission Guidelines
Meet with your advisor to ascertain how courses previously completed have transferred into your program at Northwestern. Education core courses are accepted only by authorization from the Assistant Dean of the School of Education. Transferred courses in the major or minor teaching field are accepted only by authorization of the Coordinator of the licensure program.
To be admitted into the Teacher Education Program a transfer student should follow the sequence listed below.
1) Register your intent to pursue a teacher education program with the Registrar’s Office.
2) Complete 15 credits or one full semester at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul.
3) Achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.75 at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul.
Courses taken at other institutions may also be used in evaluating a student’s admission to a teacher education program.
4) Complete EDU2215 Educational Foundations with a “C” or above or document a comparable transfer course. A Verification of Field Experience-EDU2215 form outlining field experience for a transferred course must be completed of a comparable course is approved. A positive evaluate of the field experience component is also required.
5) Achieve at least a “C” or above in ENG2205 Critical Thinking and Writing or in a comparable transfer course.
6) Demonstrate speech proficiency by receiving a “B-” or above in SPE1075 Public Speaking or SPE1825 Honors Public Speaking or in a comparable public speaking transferred course.
Students who completed a comparable transfer speech course with a grade between “C-” and “C+” should either enroll in SPE1075 or SPE1825 and successfully complete the course with a grade of “B-” or above or provide the SOE with a Verification of Speech Proficiency - Transfer Course form signed by the instructor of their transferred course. This form will include recommendations for remediation and will be used by the Admission and Retention Committee in recommending speech remediation. Remediation may include taking SPE1075 and obtaining the required minimum grade or other speech remediation experience.
7) Complete a Decision to Teach paper, an Open/Closed File form, Receipt of Information Statement, and take the School of Education Disposition Survey. These are usually completed during EDU2215 Education Foundations.

When all of the previous steps have been fulfilled, submit your completed School of Education Student Application (located on the School of Education Confluence site under Forms) and supporting documentation including the Decision to Teach paper, an Open/Closed File form, Disposition Survey (submitted electronically), and a Receipt of Information Statement to the School of Education and an interview will be scheduled by the SOE Administrative Assistant with the Admission and Retention Committee (ARC). During this interview, the student’s interests, background experiences, potential for success and suitability for teaching are discussed. The ARC has the authority to require additional assessment before admitting a student to the Teacher Education Program or as a requirement for retention within the program.
You must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program before you begin taking selected upper level (3000) education courses.
