2.4 Re-Admission to a Teacher Education Program

2.4 Readmission to a Teacher Education Program

A student who wishes to be readmitted to a teacher education program after withdrawal or termination from the program or after graduating from the University of Northwestern-St. Paul with a non-licensing major must reapply to a teacher education program and be formally admitted to a licensure program. The following procedures are followed in seeking readmission to a teacher education program.

1) The student contacts the Assistant Dean of the School of Education and requests application materials.

2) The student submits a letter of reapplication to the Assistant Dean of the School of Education along with the required application materials. The letter must include reasons for reapplication, evidence indicating the student’s potential for success in the program and the semester in which the student wishes to begin the program. Requests for Fall Semester readmission should be received by January 15th and requests for Spring Semester readmission by September 1st. This allows time for committee review to take place and appropriate planning for any field experiences that may be required.

3) The Assistant Dean of the School of Education contacts the Program Coordinator of the licensure program in which the student is seeking licensure and communicates that the student has reapplied to the program.

4) An Admission and Retention Committee (ARC) meeting is called and led by the Program Coordinator.

5) The Admission and Retention Committee (ARC) will review the student’s application for program admission and the letter of reapplication. The committee will evaluate the student’s potential for success in the teacher education program.  Consideration will be given to issues associated with the candidate’s previous enrollment in the program.  The ARC may require additional assessment before reaching a decision about readmission. The ARC will only approve readmission if they believe that the student can be successful in completing the program.  In addition, the ARC may define conditions and timelines for the readmission such as the completion of remedial course work.

6) The decision of the ARC will be communicated in writing to the student by the Assistant Dean of the School of Education.  A copy of the minutes of the ARC meeting indicating the decision is placed in the student’s SOE file.

7) If the student is readmitted to a teacher education program, enrollment in course work may begin the next semester.

If admission to a teacher education program is denied, the student must wait at least one semester before reapplying.

All readmission decisions are subject to the SOE appeals process. All readmission decisions may be appealed through the SOE appeals process.
